One of my absolute favorite BBC programs ever. Brilliant writing, great acting, and enough gripping plots that its criminal it only lasted for two seasons. Any other fans here?

It was genius.
I've got both series and the soundtrack (which kicked ass).
One of the first pictures of me that exists from the 70's shows me sitting on the bonnet of a Brown MkIII Cortina.
Not sure about Ashes to Ashes yet. Seems like a spoof of Life on Mars.

I never watched this. Is it really that good? First time I saw it advertised it reminded me of Lee & Herring's "aaaah, do you remember the 70s? Do you? Do you!?" sketches from TMWRNJ.

Oh, believe me, Cohaagen. It is indeed an excellent show--great writing, acting, etc. I highly advice you watch it sometime on reruns, since it ended at season 2 (shame). It's on Comcast Digital Cable On Demand right now, but I'm not 100% if you guys get Comcast out in England.

I don't watch much tv...never seen a full episode of Sopranos, West Wing, 24, Lost or any of the other shows that seem to be shoved down the audience throats.
Life on Mars came along without any hoopla and I was hooked after about 60 seconds.
The acting, writing, 70's soundtrack, attention to detail- all perfect.
I'm sure you know the premise - modern cop wakes up in 70's Manchester. The Sweeney meets Quantum Leap.
The writers strike in America has held up the US version starring Colm Meaney as Gene Hunt in 70's New York (I'm thinking French Connection style)
The spin off, Ashes to Ashes is slowing growing on me and I suspect it's going to keep going in different directions to Life on Mars.
