IMHO both of them are ace. Friedman was excellent on those Megadeth albums and Hammett was at his all-time best in the 1980s, although after the Black Album, his solos weren't quite as interesting or exciting, thanks to the commercial route Metallica were taking.

I love Hammett's solos, but I like Friedman more. He has very recognizable style, can shred like a motherfucker, but can also play beautiful melodic stuff. This song is great example of Marty's more melodic stuff: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Crrnqc03GjsLovely song

Hammett's best work to me (see 80's Metallica) is better than Friedman's best (see Megdaeth's Rust In Peace). Plus Hammett was the sole guitarist in Metallica while Friedman had some help (not that I'm saying he needed it) by Mustaine. Either way, both great guitarists but I find Hammett's work more memorable and better overall.
