There are bad cops and there are good cops - and then there's Bullitt.1968 saw the release of Bullitt staring Steve McQueen. McQueen gives a subtle performance as the awesomely named Det. Frank Bullitt. The movie lacks a strong antagonist but makes up for it with great moments from the smaller bad guys, including one of the greatest car chases ever filmed. This film is a milestone in the history of action cinema. Without Bullitt there'd be no Dirty Harry, French Connection, Cobra, Die Hard or Lethal Weapon. They all owe something to this movie. This is McQueen at the height of his cool and though most of the film is slow, he carries it forward. I'd also like to mention that Dirty Harry was originally written as a sequel to Bullitt but McQueen didn't want to repeat himself. And (my source here is the movie Zodiac) they were both based on the same San Francisco cop. us.imdb.com/title/tt0062765/

"Slow" and "lacks a strong atagonist" are exactly why I love this movie. It's a great balance of action and detective work, with McQueen showing off just how damn cool he is the entire time. The emphasis isn't on "here's the bad guy, let's go kill him!" Instead, you have to find out who is the bad guy, and what exactly is going on. Also, Robert Vaughn was brilliant as Chalmers -- you really hated that guy by the end of the movie.

This is one of my favourite thrillers of all time. Steve McQueen ruled every inch of the screen whenever he came on as Frank Bullitt. He was the ultimate man of honour and someone you wouldn't want to screw with, yet he also made mistakes, which made him more human.
Robert Vaughn showed there was much more to him than Napoleon Solo and THAT car chase set the trend for Hollywood action pics.

What adds to Bullitt's realism also is that McQueen only killed 3 people in the whole movie (same tally as Clint Eastwood in the first Dirty Harry movie). He didn't even intend to kill the hitmen in the Dodge Charger, but had to run them off the road to defend himself.
The original novel on which Bullitt is based is also worth checking out. Mute Witness is a standard police procedural drama, but despite being more dialogue driven, it offers more depth to the story and in this, the main cop is called Clancy and his partners are Stanton and Kaproski.

One of the greatest cops films of all-time, McQueen just plays his cool self like he always did and gets the job done his way. My personal favorite car chase of all-time, that '68 Ford Mustang GT was just so bad-ass, don't which is cooler, the car or McQueen.
