Another undisputed Bronson classic! Also directed by Mr. e-sure himself. It may be a Dirty Harry rip-off, but it sure has loads of violent action and shootouts galore. The skyscraper mob massacre is genius and it's cool the way Chuck follows the main bad guy after he's confessed to all his sins (aawww). Neat car chase, too, with Chuck smashing his way through market stalls, windows and warehouses.

The trailer's the business. They don't make 'em like that any more. It's fab to see Bronson, the hero of the movie, shoot bad guys and tear up a city while chasing a perp. Around about the time he was filming Stone Killer, Chuck and Winner were offered the chance to do Death Wish. The rest, as they say, is history.

The rest, as they say, is history. Yeah, Bronson History. The story goes that Bronson wanted to do another movie with Winner after The Stone Killer. Winner said the only good script he had was Death Wish, the story of an architect who's family is killed and he goes around shooting muggers. Bronson said "I'd like to do that". Winner said "You want to make the picture?" Bronson said "No, shoot muggers"

I'll never forget his interrogation scene with Jack Colvin in The Stone Killer. Colvin : Are you gonna hurt me? Bronson : I'm not gonna hurt you. (He then smacks the shit out of him, leaving him with a bruised face)

Looks like someone is selling (bootleg) DVD's of Stone Killer from his website in England for a small price. He also sells to North America, but I'll have to figure out the exchange rate before I do any purchasing. www.freewebs.com/movies-for-oz/stonekiller.htm

As with Chato's Land, Bronson gets to kill someone before the opening credits appear. The film also provides him with some tough, hard-boiled dialogue, such as the following:
Lieutenant: That kid was only seventeen. Torrey: The gun made him older.
Torrey: We had you gift-wrapped from the time you picked up the stuff, candyman. Now we want the john. Which room? Pusher: (no response) Torrey: You're a connection and you're black. And this ain't a tolerant society. You've got enough rocks to break.
Matthews: What hit him? Torrey: A complete state of death.
(The latter quote was the title of a John Gardner book, on which the film was based. In the book, Torrey was a Scotland Yard detective.)
I'm surprised The Stone Killer has fallen into obscurity over the years. Unlike many of his lesser-known 70's films (ie. Breakout; St. Ives), this one finds Bronson in the kind of tough guy role that made him a star. It also features several familiar character actors- including many that would soon appear in popular televison shows: Stuart Margolin, Ralph Waite, Jack Colvin, Norman Fell, and John Ritter.

Columbia finally released this one through their movies-on-demand DVD-R label. Sucks that it's a DVD-R instead of an actual DVD, but I suppose it's better than nothing. I just wish these companies that have DVD-R services would come down on their prices. I will rarely pay $20 for a brand new DVD or Blu-Ray so there's no way in hell I'll spend that on a DVD-R. I could maybe see $10 bucks. $15 at absolute most. But again... better than nothing. It's an official release and it's out there if you're willing to part with $20 at Amazon.

You can get a region 2 copy of this and also over here on Five USA, they sometimes show The Stone Killer which was also screened on UK terrestrial channel ITV a few times in the '80s and '90s.
