I agree with Mark Lester, Arnold Schwarzenegger as 'JOHN MATRIX/COMMANDO'(tm) really started a craze and a new friggin' fashion.
I mean, before Matrix, nobody except rockstar Billy Idol used to cut his hair and make them spiky (Billy Idol's were longer and punk-looking anyway). Besides, John Rambo didn't use tiger-striped looking war paint and/or strictly military clothes and/or TONS and TONS of weapons, so John Matrix as Commando was really an unique icon at the time.
Generally speaking, even as civilian John Matrix, his clothes were somehow unique: a military green shirt on banana pants, that's one hell of combo (uhm without counting the HORRID grey jacket they gave him at the airport).
Finally, I must add that COMMANDO must have surely inspired the Marvel character CABLE in terms of visuals.
