A family's home is haunted by a host of ghosts.Definitely one of my favorite films, it manges to concur up lots of tension and jumps with little to no gore and no death scenes, that`s impressive. Lets not forget the clown under the bed! The jury seems to be out on who really directed this Hooper or Spielberg but this site makes for some interesting reading. www.poltergeist.poltergeistiii.com/really.html

I never seen the second one, but I'm gonna do something about that in the near future. The third one starring Tom Skerritt and Nancy Allen was actually a lot of fun and I liked it a bit more than the first one. I enjoyed the fact that it all takes place in a skyscraper rather than a house once again.
Its the same for me with the Exorcist films, I haven't seen the second one but the third film was a great surprise and again I liked it more than the original.

Watched the trilogy last night and I thought the second film was a big letdown, but it did have some neat special effects and Julian Beck was great as Reverend Kane.
I would put the first one on top and the third comes second, while the sequel is on the bottom.
1. Poltergeist (1982) 6/10 2. Poltergeist 3 (1988) 5/10 3. Poltergeist 2: The Other Side (1986) 5/10
