A classic film featuring what I feel is a career best performance from Hauer. The documentary on the DVD is a great watch, C Thomas Howell freely admits Hauer scarred the shit out of him on set due to his general intensity.

So many classic moments in this such as Howell making that grisly discovery in his food, finding out that Hauer has removed the bullets from his gun, when the police chase him and the grand finale where he decides to have a mano a mano showdown with Hauer who apparently really enjoyed doing this flick.

Rutger Hauer playing cat and mouse the sadistic way. From the opening scene where C Thomas Howell plays a young naive man and realizes he's in deep shit is hard to beat, but the whole film is filled with scenes like that and that's what makes The Hitcher such a great classic.
The soundtrack is very haunting and beautiful when compared to the horrors in the movie, and it does remind me a bit of some of the 80's stuff Tangerine Dream did.
