The first proper buddy-buddy, wisecracking cop thriller of the '80s and also a powerful, violent, fast-paced action movie featuring fights, gun battles and chases. Nick Nolte was born to play Jack Cates, a hard-boiled, slightly crazy maverick San Francisco detective who gets convict Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy in a sizzling debut) out of jail to help him nail two killers who were in the same gang as he was when they committed a bank robbery a few years back. As ever, Cates and Hammond hate each other at first but grow to be a top team as they get closer to the bad guys. Directed by Walter Hill who had carved his niche making darker thrillers like The Driver and Southern Comfort.
