Dr. Peyton Westlake (Liam Neeson) is trying hard to find a cure for people with burn wounds and which involves using synthetic skin to help giving them a new start.
The problem is that after 99 minutes the synthetic skin disintegrates.
But Dr. Westlake together with his co-worker find out that they can use the darkness to stabilize the skin cells so that it doesn't get destroyed within the 99 minutes barrier.
Sadly their victory is only temporarily when a bunch of ruthless thugs lead by the brutal gangster boss Robert G. Durant (Larry Drake) pays them a visit.
They destroy the lab and tortures Peyton for information he does not know anything about and after that Durant and his crew rigs up a bomb and leaves Dr. Westlake and his dreams to be blown to pieces.
What they didn't know was that Dr. Westlake survived and even though his body is heavily scarred and disfigured he is able to escape and save several of his computers and material from the burnt down lab.
Peyton decides to keep working on finding the perfect cure for synthetic skin and at the same time get even with Durant and his men.
Crime has a new enemy and his name is Darkman!
Liam Neeson is perfect in the role as Dr. Peyton Westlake and gives us one of his best performances on the screen.
Sam Raimi and Neeson is a great team and there is a fine mix between sadness and comedy added with lots of explosive action.
And lets not forget Larry Drake who steals the show as the sadistic Robert G. Durant.
"Darkman" is a great film and one of the best super hero movies ever made in my opinion and even though the direct-to-video sequels a couple of years later is not in the same league they are still worthy a watch now and then.
