Mr Seagal`s first and last film as a director and unsurprisingly his most self indulgent. The message of the film is extremely twisted and ironic "I`ll protect the environment by killing 30 people and blowing up an oil refinery. Genius. There`s a bar scene in which The Great One gives a racist guy a beating and learns the error`s of his ways immediately. What does it take to change the essence of a man? The cast is quite good mind, Micheal Caine with the worst hair-dye job in history (it changes from brown to pitch black through out the film), John C. McGinley (the guy off Scrubs), R. Lee Ermey and Arnold`s old buddy Sven Thorsen. Let`s not forget Seagal fighting a bear in the funniest dream sequence of all time and that two minute rant about pollution at the end. In short, it`s crap but I really love it.

My guy in D.C. tells me that we are not dealing with a student here, we're dealing with the Professor. Any time the military has an operation that can't fail, they call this guy in to train the troops, OK? He's the kind of guy that would drink a gallon of gasoline so he could piss in your campfire! You could drop this guy off at the Arctic Circle wearing a pair of bikini underwear, without his toothbrush, and tomorrow afternoon he's going to show up at your pool side with a million dollar smile and fist full of pesos. This guy's a professional, you got me? If he reaches this rig, we're all gonna be nothing but a big goddamned hole right in the middle of Alaska. So let's go find him and kill him and get rid of the son of a bitch!
I love this movie!

I absolutely love this movie. Seagal tackling a bear makes this movie absolutely perfect, also considering the fact that he directed it. What the hell was with the cut in the middle of the ending credits where it just STOPS and Seagal is sitting with Joan Chen on a boat and says "isn't it beautiful" then the credits continue?

In "Seagalogy" Outlaw Vern refers to this as the pinnacle of Seagal films because it takes the elements that made him unique among action stars and elevates them to their highest degree. Best bar fight, best distinguished costar, best spirituality, etc.
I remember not being a big fan but I haven't seen it in years except on TBS with all the good stuff cut out. I'd be very interested in a 2nd viewing.

I had a glance at a book on Michael Caine today, and it said that Seagal is the one person he would never work with again. That's out of a lot of people too! Ah well.

Yeah, Steven and his massive ego seems to rub a lot of people the wrong way I wonder if he showed Michael a move or two,and ''accidentally'' broke his arm?

As great as this movie is, why does it have such a sucky villain death? Forrest shoots the cable and Jennings falls into oil--that's it? Come on, Fire Down Below had a better turnout: Orin got blasted in the shoulder and thrown in prison to meet Tyrone. Jennings could have at least gotten a more novelty of a death like getting impaled (w/ an oil pipe or something) and falling into the oil afterwards. Or maybe get Aikido'd into an out-sticking valve wheel like Sandman got in Death Warrant.

Seagal "accidentally" broke Sean Connery`s wrist while teaching him martial arts. True story. As great as this movie is, why does it have such a sucky villain death? It just add`s to the greatness. On a random note "I love the spirit world and I loved your father" is one of the funniest lines ever.

The thing that always cracks me up about Caine's death is that Joan Chen says "This is for my father!" even though she did nothing to actually contribute to his death! Seagal obviously wanted her to avenge her father's death, but at the same time there was no way in hell he was gonna let that old bag steal his thunder by actually killing him herself

Everything about this film is excellent, from Seagal's envirnomental preaching to expressing his love for a man he hardly knew to blowing up a oil refinery to "save the environment" to fighting a bear. Pure genuis.

I finished On Deadly Ground & liked it. It started out slow & the Eskimo stuff was boring but once it got to the action, it was great. Seagal in his fringe leather jacket was pretty funny stuff. I was hoping for a better showdown between him & Sven Ole-Thorson but alas we got typical one-sided Seagal battles. I wish the dream fight between Seagal & the bear was longer but it was still funny nonetheless.
I love how he basically beat the prejudice out of Mike Starr during the bar fight.
Michael Caine's death could'v been better but I guess drowning in oil is funny. He need a bath...just like Tommy O'Shea in Death Wish V.
And I could've sworn that R. Lee Ermey was wearing a fake mustache.
I actually enjoyed Seagal's speech at the end. Wasn't as boring & lame as I thought it would be.
Overall, On Deadly Ground is below every Seagal movie that came before it but it's still a good effort on his part. Definitely not worth the thrashings that it gets.
