I know the Amiga was a computer and not really a console, but it was still great for gaming. However I've opted for the Dreamcast, only barely retro in a way I guess, but it was something that I felt was ahead of it's time, superb variety of fun games, and was my only source of online porn as a 16 year old lad, we didn't have a PC at the time.
EDIT---
Can't believe I forgot to add the first Playstation to the list.

Growing up, I was a Sega Genesis kid although in the end, Super NES was probably the best older system.
I loved the Dreamcast as well. Thought it was a pretty good system that died out too early. Shenmue remains one of the coolest games ever. The graphics were silent & smooth, just like always.

Megadrive was the first console I got, and in many ways it remains my favourite, even though these days I'm more of a Mario guy than a Sonic guy.

Indeed, Sonic really has gone downhill, the last decent game was Sonic Adventure 2, the GBA games weren't too bad though to be fair.
Sonic CD on the other hand, has got to be one of the most overrated games I've ever played, about three years ago I picked up a second hand Mega CD just to play this, my God was I disappointed.

I thought Sonic CD was pretty decent but not the best Sonic game out at the time. The concept of time travel was cool since it was kind of like Back to the Future(going really fast then traveling through time) but there was just something about the game that didn't make it great. I still play it every now & then on my PC for nostalgia purposes.

For me, there was the SNES, and then there was everything else.
I've still got it and won't ever part with it. So many top-notch classics on it - Super Mario Kart, Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Street Fighter II Turbo, F-Zero, Zelda...

YES! now you're talking, some of my greatest childhood memories were playing that game, for some odd reason we had nicknames for everything, one gun we renamed the Meat Eater (RCP90), and we were currently going through a stage of calling the free sex line (turns out it was for sex advice, aimed at teenagers) well anyway my mate always used to ring them, and bang on about body chocolate, so everytime one of us collected the body armor , we say "I've got the body chocolate" ;D

The Megadrive was awesome, I remember half of my secondary school lass queuing outside the local video ship at lunchtime to grab a 2 minute shot of Sonic 2.
Special nod to the N64 for Goldeneye, it was actually very close to being released on the Xbox Live arcade but M$ and Nintendo couldn't agree on how to split the profits. Wankers..
I also enjoyed Shenmue on the Dreamcast along with Virtua Striker, an absolute turd of a single player game but great fun on two player.
My vote goes to the Megadrive.

I loved the Amiga....Shadow of the Beast was fucking excellent.
The last console I owned was a Megadrive. Haven't owned anything since. Too complicated. I'd have no idea how to handle an X Box or Playstation.
I liked simple joysticks and joypads with no more than three buttons.
Double Dragon, Outrun, Shinobi.....brilliant.

SNES was incredible, it's probably because i was just getting old enough to really play games properly when it came out but i thought it was magical. I remember playing F-Zero in PC world in London then knowing i had to have a SNES for Christmas. I even had that weird bazooka thing. I still have mine too, i play Super Mario World and Zelda every now and then. There's a few games i wish i'd kept hold of though, such as my personal favourite - Donkey Kong Country.
