Lost Highway is my favorite Lynch movie by far. I think Eraserhead iss simply creepy with no story or real characters to back it up. The
Elephant Man is pretty good, but not as signature Lynch as he can get.
Dune is a train wreck, but a funny and cheesy enough one to watch once.
Blue Velvet is classic Lynch. It has his signature craziness, but is grounded in reality.
Wild At Heart on the other hand is craziness in a fairy tale world so it's on the other end of the spectrum, but it's still pretty good.
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me was a fitting prequel to the series. There were some moments that left me scratching my head (the "gobble gobble" scene for instance), but overall it did a good job with all the dark themes of its story.
Lost Highway is my personal favorite Lynch movie. It is just crazy enough to leave you thinking, but not crazy enough that it doesn't make sense.
The Straight Story despite being his sole G rated Walt Disney Pictures production is to me his most frightening movie. Part of it is probably the fact that it IS rated G yet it scares the hell out of me, but also just because it is scary. I had no idea I was going to be frightened when I popped that movie in, but man Lynch didn't hold anything back. I also found the movie really boring and fell asleep a little bit during it. Definitely my least favorite of his films.
Then came Mulholland Drive. I thought this is where Lynch just got too crazy. People have debated endlessly about what this movie is about, but in reality I don't think it's really interesting enough to debate about. Aside from Naomi Watts acting which I found brilliant I didn't really enjoy this film. There really doesn't seem to me to be much of a plot behind all the typical crazy Lynchisms.
Lastly, there is Inland Empire. I actually got a bunch of my friends to go see it who had no idea what this movie was and who had never seen a Lynch movie before. Well, at the end of the movie we all came to an agreement: the movie is terrible. I know some people like it, but I didn't get anything out of it. It just seemed like even Lynch didn't know what he was doing this time and it doesn't help when you read about how there wasn't a script when they were shooting or that the actors had no idea what the movie was when they were filming.
