A groundbreaking neo-western for its time and the film that put Sam Peckinpah on the map. The shootout at the end is monstrously cataclysmic and possibly the greatest action sequence ever made.
The opening gun battle is impressive, too, and this film was a credit to the western/action genre.
I recorded it off BBC2 in the mid-90s when they premiered the Director's Cut. My damn tape was a dud, but I finally got to see it in all its glory two years later.
It's got a terrific cast. Holden, Borgnine, Ryan, Oates, Ben Johnson and Strother Martin who was so good at playing sleazy chaps.
