It's Steve McQueen again, this time playing a hard-as-nails, devil-may-care commando in Don Siegel's 1962 World War II action thriller.
The King of Cool is part of a unit who have to retrieve a 'pill box' or something from the Germans if they want to have any chance of defeating them.
McQueen's character carries a nasty-looking knife in this and he has that look of death.
Also supporting him are James Coburn and Harry Guardino (Dirty Harry).
Some tense scenes and explosive action.

This movie has some of the greatest explosions I've ever seen in a black and white film. The problem I had was that they started off with a great premise (the soldiers have to pretend to be a larger force to hold off the opposing army) then they just got rid of it at the beginning of the third act.

I haven't seen this film in a while, so I don't remember, but I do remember James Coburn being blown up by a mine and McQueen sacrificing himself at the end. One smart scene was near the beginning where he fools a barmaid into speaking German. When she's rumbled, she tries to hit him, but he grabs her wrist.
