After Pardon Chato, a mestizo, killed a US marshal in self-defense, a posse pursues him, but as the white volunteers advance deep in Indian territory they become more hunted then prey, leading to internal strife. They rape Chato's squaw, and are hunted down to the last man by the unrelenting warrior. This is a pretty brutal movie with very little in the way of plot. Still the performances are great and the landscapes are beautiful. Jack Palance plays the man who gathers the posse but he's poorly used. Bronson speaks fewer words in this film than almost any other he's done. This is the first film Bronson did with Michael Winner. It came out before Death Wish (also Winner) and has the same themes of revenge. However I watched it and completely missed the Vietnam allegory entirely until I read about it later. Think of the last act of Mad Max, when he goes after the motorcycle gang and that's pretty much this movie. Bronson is merciless and unstoppable. Just the way it should be.

I have this movie. Bronson spends almost the entire time with his shirt off, and his physique is incredible, just as good as in Hard Times and generally terrific for a man in his 50s. I hope that when I reach middle age I have a tab-and-booze-seasoned voice, rock hard pecs, droopy moustache and slanty eyes, and walk about chinning people and saying fuck all.
I didn't feel sorry for any of the bug-eyed redneck shitheads who bought it in the movie, least of all the bigoted geek that Charlie croaks in the bar at the beginning.

SPOILER!!
My only complaint is that Palance and Bronson don't get to play a scene together.
END SPOILER

Just seen this. Pretty interesting; I can see a certain amount of influence on First Blood in this. It's also very rewarding visually, which shows there was once more to Winner than E-sure adverts and insulting toilet cleaners. Having said that, not much really happens, and it doesn't end so much as just stop! (Although the last scene is pretty badass)
