There is a brutal serial killer on the loose and after several gruesome family murders the police has still no clues and is getting desperate. They now turn to the retired FBI bloodhound Will Graham (William Petersen).
Graham knows the score. The last time he was in action it almost cost him his life and sanity. Still he decides to help out his old friend and boss Jack Crawford (Dennis Farina) one last time.
The murderer is always one step ahead. Graham is very well aware of this, and decides to fresh up his memory with a little visit to an old "friend". He hopes this will help him to understand the murders way of thinking or maybe get some kind of hint or a clue so that the police may have a better chance of putting an end to the serial killer once and for all.
If this does not lead to anything, Graham will then try to lure the killer out in a trap, with himself as the bait.
Unfortunately the plan backfires and the whole murder case is getting a little bit to personal as Will Graham has gone from being the hunter, to be the hunted.Manhunter might seem a bit slow at first but believe me this is one of those movies that keeps getting better every time you watch it. I like the other Hannibal Lecter films too, but Manhunter sticks out and not in a bad way. Also be sure to check out the awesome soundtrack that finally got a CD relase in 2010 by Intrada.

And Tom Noonan would go on to play Cain in RoboCop 2.
I remember that scene very well. The Tooth Fairy was one of the creepiest villains of '80s cinema, without a doubt.

Always liked Tom Noonan, especially in Manhunter and The Monster Squad or in The Last Action Hero as the Ripper. He also had some roles in another Michael Mann film, Heat and the horror film Wolfen.
But yeah, The Tooth Fairy in Manhunter is right up there along with the greatest villains of the 80's. Also Brian Cox even though he does not have a very big role in Manhunter, still I think he portrays a more chilling Dr Lecter than Anthony Hopkins later and more famous version.
By the way here is an awesome tribute to William Petersen with the use of Michel Rubinis main theme. Very similar to Pink Floyd/Tangerine Dream, and I think Michael Mann wanted the Germans to do another soundtrack for him, but they where already working on a new album, so he did go for a lot of ambient new wave/synth tunes along with pop and rock songs and it worked out great.

Michael Mann brought a lot of style and substance to his movies. Ironically, back in 1985 or 1986, he tried to sue William Friedkin allegedly, claiming that To Live & Die In LA ripped off Miami Vice's ideas, but he lost and William L. Petersen was in that movie as Richard Chance, the renegade Secret Service agent.

To Live & Die In L.A. is a great action-thriller. Saw it last summer and had almost forgot how good of movie it was.
Very brutal and stylish, and as with Manhunter it also had a fine soundtrack too.

Watched this for the first time tonight and really liked it. It did start out slow but picked up pretty well toward the middle so I was drawn in.
Noonan was great in it. Truly an underrated actor.

Nice to see you enjoyed it, Kimble. For me it took some time before I began appreciating it. Mainly because I was so used to the Hannibal Lecter films with Anthony Hopkins, but as of now Manhunter has gone on to become one of my favorite films. Its a great 80's action-thriller treasure! The "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" scene has to be one of the coolest action moments ever made. The way it builds up and the tension going along with the music playing in the background, and then suddenly all hell breaks loose! "You owe me awe!"

That final action scene was absolutely amazing and William L. Petersen kicked ass. In a way with that beard, he reminds me of an old geography teacher at high school.

In a short documentary on the making of Manhunter, Tom Noonan told that he wanted to stay away from the rest of the cast, so when he and William Petersen would go head to head, none of the other actors had seen him and know how he looked or behaved.
Some people backstage were actually frightened by Noonan's massive appearance.
According to Wikepedia, William Petersen had some problems getting rid of his Will Graham character after the filming was over:
Because his role in Michael Mann's Manhunter was so emotionally exhausting, he did everything he could to rid himself of Graham after finishing principal photography. He shaved off his beard, cut his hair and dyed it blonde. He also claims to have done this because, while rehearsing for a play in Chicago, his dialogue was always coming out like Graham's; he dyed his hair so he could look in the mirror and see a different person.
Here's an old interview with William Petersen talking about Manhunter and Will Graham.
From 04:52 Briax Cox is talking about his role as Hannibal Lector.
Tom Noonan talks about Manhunter and Arnold.

So many of the scenes in Manhunter are stunningly beautiful and I could only imagine how great they will look on Blu-ray.

Manhunter was my Dad's favorite movie (along with To Live and Die in LA curiously enough) so I grew up on this.
Michael Mann's style cannot be beat. well... studios think they can with digital color correction. feh!
