After working with Paul Verhoeven in several dutch films troughout the 70's, Rutger Hauer got the role as the chilling terrorist Wulfgar in Sylvester Stallone's underrated action flick Nighthawks (1981). This would lead to his breakthrough one year later as he caught the attention of Ridley Scott, who gave him the role of the replicant leader Roy Batty in the sci-fi classic Blade Runner. Rutger continued getting roles of villains who enjoyed playing psychological games with their prey, but when he was cast in the leading role of the action-adventure firm Ladyhawke in 1985, Rutger shifted towards more heroic parts and had a great run through the late 80's and early 90's with combination of action and comedy. Sadly most of them never really got the recognition they deserved. But in 2005 Rutger got a small comeback with roles in two of the years best films, Sin City and Batman Begins. In 2007 he appeared in the documentary of Blade Runner: The Final Cut DVD. Finally in 2010 Hauer landed the role of an angry vigilante in Hobo With A Shotgun, which marked his long awaited comeback in a leading role of an action film. The Dutchman did not disappoint his fans, and kicked ass like there's no tomorrow! In 2011 he began working with the legendary Italian director Dario Argento in Dracula 3D, where he plays Van Helsing. Rutger Hauer is one of my favorite actors and I'm glad he's still around even though he's later film career has been like a roller coaster, he always delivers. My top 10 Rutger Hauer list: 01 Wanted: Dead or Alive (1987) 02 Blade Runner (1982) 03 The Hitcher (1986) 04 Wedlock (1991) 05 Hobo With A Shotgun (2011) 06 Surviving the Game (1994) 07 Blind Fury (1989) 08 Flesh + Blood (1985) 09 The Osterman Weekend (1983) 10 Ladyhawke (1985)

I've not seen a whole lot of Rutger's movies just yet, but of the ones I've seen, I've enjoyed. Blind Fury is probably my favorite.
Hobo With a Shotgun was fun, but I would've preferred a little more gritty and less... Troma-y.

What Rutger should do is reunite with Paul Verhoeven for a dark, uncompromising and gritty thriller in which he has a cameo role as a good guy, helping the main hero fight the forces of evil. That would be awesome.
I don't know if any of you have heard about this, but according to Stallone, Rutger Hauer gave a terrific performance in the original longer version of Nighthawks which featured more character exposition and a bloodier finale. I think it must have explained why Wulfgar was so evil.

That would be awesome. Hell yeah! Rutger should have done a sci-fi/action or a bloody spaghetti western film with Verhoeven, along with Ronny Cox, Michael Ironside and Kurtwood Smith. I fucking love Split Second!.Rutger is so good in that one and there some hilarious dialogue as well. ''Satan is in deep shit'' Damn, I forgot Split Second. That was a pretty fun flick and it featured some nice action scenes. I thought the predator/alien rat-creature was pretty cool too. By the way here is the leaked teaser/trailer of Dario Argentos Dracula 3D with Rutger Hauer as Van Helsing. The CGI effects its not finished, but still it looks like a pretty entertaning film.

Did you know that Rutger was one of the original choices to play RoboCop? No disrespect to Peter Weller, but I reckon he could have pulled it off as the dedicated family man / police officer who gets turned into a cyborg although to be fair, he had already played an android in Blade Runner.
For me, his best action movies were Wanted Dead Or Alive and Blind Fury.

I think that I read or saw it in a documentary from either the triple unrated disc from 2001 or the special edition DVD from 2007, and that Rutger didn't fit the Robocop costume cause he was to big. The thought of Rutger as Murphy/Robocop that could have been epic, but in the end Peter Weller did an fantastic job.
If there is no hope of a comeback film with Hauer and Verhoeven then I could picture Rutger in a dark action-thriller where David Cronenberg is in charge.
